A Quickstart Guide : How To Get A Real Estate License In New Jersey

Step 1: Make sure you meet the basic requirements

The basic requirements to get a New Jersey real estate license are simple. Do you meet these requirements?

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You are a legal resident in the United States
  • You have a high school diploma or equivalent

Step 2: Register for real estate licensing classes

A real estate license is required for most real estate jobs. New Jersey requires 75 hours of pre-licensing education before they will let you get a real estate license.

Licensed attorneys can skip the pre-licensing education and complete the application to fast-track their license.

New Jersey does not have a reciprocal license agreement with any state, BUT they have an education waiver for licensees in New York and Pennsylvania.

Step 4: Complete the New Jersey real estate license application

The application will ask you some basic questions about you and your background, including any other real estate licenses you have held or currently hold. The New Jersey license application fee is $160. You need to submit fingerprints with your application and the fee for fingerprinting is $66.

It takes New Jersey 2-4 weeks to process most applications.
