A Quickstart Guide : How To Get A Real Estate License In Iowa

Step 1: Make sure you meet the basic requirements

The basic requirements to get an Iowa real estate license are simple. Do you meet all of these requirements?

  • You are at least 18 years old (you are allowed to sit for the state exam before you turn 18, but you must be 18 to apply for the license)
  • You have not had a real estate license application rejected by Iowa or any state in the previous twelve months

Note: You may be asked questions about your citizenship status on the application, but you are NOT required to be a US citizen in order to get a real estate license in Iowa.

Step 2: Register for real estate licensing classes

A real estate license is required for most real estate jobs. Iowa requires 60 hours of pre-licensing courses before you can apply for a real estate license.

Step 3: Apply to take the Iowa real estate exam

You can apply to take the Iowa real estate exam after you have completed the licensing education requirements.

PSI Examination Services is the testing agency for the State of Iowa. They manage the exam process through their facilities. The Iowa real estate exam fee is $95.

Step 4: Complete the Iowa real estate license application

The application will ask you some basic questions about you and your background, including any other real estate licenses you have held or currently hold. The Iowa license application fee is $125.

You must complete a background check that is submitted with your application. The cost of the background check is $51 and it must be completed within the 210 days preceding your application.

Your signature on the Iowa real estate license application must be notarized. Don’t forget this step!

You must also submit proof of errors and omissions insurance, and find a sponsoring broker before your license can be activated.

Step 6: Choose a sponsoring broker
